Climate change is undoubtedly the most significant
concern humanity faces today, and it is our
responsibility to take the edge off the carbon
footprint stamping down on the environment. An
alternative fuel promises a viable and sustainable
solution for rectifying this man-made damage to
the Earth—a much-needed action to save its resources for the
upcoming generations.
A prominent agricultural technology company, BioProducts,
LLC is at the forefront of navigating this indispensable
shift from conventional to alternative fuel. It specializes in
developing alternative fuels and other value-added products
from sustainable biomass, advocating environmental integrity
and sustainability beyond borders.
“In the expanse of our forest and agricultural lands,
colossal amounts of residues are left behind; branches, corn
stover, sugarcane bagasse, and stillage from distilleries hold
immense potential as renewable energy sources. However,
they often remain underutilized due to the lack of means to
collect, transport and process them, leading to environmental
degradation or even forest fire,” says Dr. Jagannadh Satyavolu,
founder and CEO, BioProducts.
BioProducts is an innovator in the niche, ideally positioned
to tap into this hidden treasure and work toward a common
goal—transforming biomass into useful products. The company
holds a range of patents, licensed from the University of
Louisville, designed to transform the discarded biomass in
forests and agricultural fields into value-added products.
Its patented technologies, coupled with other cutting-edge
technologies, allow for processing biomass in environmentally
conscious and economically advantageous manners.

Thanks to its wealth of commercialization experience
spanning academia and major industries, BioProducts,
working with its partners, C&I Engineering (www.cieng.com)
and Action Industries (www.actionindinc.com), is actively
engaged in a broad array of projects, indicating significant
progress. For example, the company is partnering with leading
ethanol producers to develop a powerful suite retrofit solutions
and other products, intending to diversify communities’
revenue streams and elevating environmental sustainability. It
also focuses on commercializing the technologies and aims to
operationalize its demonstration plant by the end of 2024.
With the environmental toll weighing heavy on Earth,
BioProducts’ contributions to transform biomass into lucrative
opportunities serve as a symbol of hope for the upcoming
generations. Partnering with this reliable green-tech innovator,
business world can come together to protect our planet,
presenting a sustainable Earth to our successors.

EPA Announces First-Ever ENERGY STAR Certified Distilleries

November 17, 2023

WASHINGTON – Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is recognizing eight distilleries for being the first to earn EPA’s ENERGY STAR certification for superior energy performance. On average, a large distillery—one that produces more than 750,000 proof gallons per year—consumes as much energy as 7,000 American homes. Distilleries that earn the ENERGY STAR use significantly less energy, and contribute fewer greenhouse gas emissions, than their peers.

“To solve the climate crisis, we need every sector of American manufacturing to demonstrate leadership in reducing emissions,” said EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan. “I congratulate these ENERGY STAR-certified plants for leading the way and showing that distilleries can reduce emissions by operating in a more energy efficient and cost-effective way.”

The first distilleries to earn EPA’s ENERGY STAR certification are:

  • Bardstown Bourbon Company Distillery; Bardstown, Ky.
  • Brown Forman’s Jack Daniel Distillery; Lynchburg, Tenn.
  • Rabbit Hole Distillery, Louisville, Ky.
  • Heaven Hill’s Bernheim Distillery; Louisville, Ky.
  • Heaven Hill’s Deep Eddy Vodka Distillery; Buda, Texas
  • MGP/Lux Row Distillery; Bardstown, Ky.
  • Heaven’s Door Distillery; Pleasureville, Ky.
  • Westland Whiskey Distillery, Seattle, Wash.

DJI released the latest in their line of Matrice drones with the new DJI Matrice 300 RTK. The Matrice 300 was inspired by modern aviation systems and designed for industrial and commercial applications. This DJI drone comes with new features and advanced AI capabilities that make it an integral tool for a wide variety of applications. The Matrice 300 can help you conduct better surveillance missions and smart inspections than any other commercial drone on the market.

With the ability to manage multiple payloads including the new Zenmuse H20 and H20T cameras, the M300 is a rock star of drone technology. We’ll go over all its biggest features, including its many AI capabilities that make it so powerful. We’ll also go over the newest payloads that are compatible with it and its main applications.

With an extended range and flight time, a more flexible remote controller setup, and new AI features to make your mission easier, the new DJI M300 RTK commercial drone is the latest in revolutionary drone technology. Here are the biggest features of the Matrice 300:

MAIN FEATURES

15km Range

Thanks to the all-new OcuSync Enterprise, the Matrice 300 can broadcast transmission from up to 15 km away. This gives you a massive range to conduct your mission and fly the commercial drone from a safe distance. Not only can the Matrice 300 transmit 1080p video content from up to 15 km, but it also uses 2.4/5.8GHz real-time auto-switching to prevent interference or loss of transmission.

55min Flight Time

One of the hardest parts of using a drone for surveying or mapping a site is having to quit halfway through and replace the batteries in the drone. The Matrice 300 has a max flight time of up to 55 minutes, leaving you plenty of time to complete your mission before you need to recharge. And when using a drone for firefighting operations, it’s more important than ever to have a drone that won’t lose battery at just the wrong moment.

54km/h Wind Resistance

The DJI M300 RTK is a sturdy commercial drone, providing an enhanced flight performance with wind resistance of up to 54km/h. This helps give you a more efficient and stable flight even in tricky environments with suboptimal weather.

82.8km/h Speed

The M300 is a particularly fast DJI drone, with a max speed of 82.8km/h. The refined propulsion system and airframe allows you to quickly navigate expansive terrain during time-sensitive operations such as search and rescue operations. With a 7m/s max descend speed, you can easily bring this DJI drone down to the ground in a quick and controlled manner.

IP45 Ingress Protection

Drones often sustain damage from more than just crashing into obstacles. Dust and water from inclement weather can also pose a threat to drones and damage the aircraft. Thanks to the M300’s IP45 ingress protection, this commercial drone is dust and water resistant, leaving you free to perform missions in environments with adverse weather without fear.

Omnidirectional Obstacle Avoidance

While this commercial drone was built to last, crashing into obstacles is a peril that puts many drones at risk of damage. Thanks to the dual-vision and ToF sensors on all six sides of the aircraft, you can detect obstacles from up to 40m away.

This omnidirectional obstacle avoidance allows you to safely navigate complicated environments without damaging the aircraft or compromising your mission.

MULTI PAYLOAD CONFIGURATION

Each mission is unique. Whether you’re using a drone for reconnaissance, surveillance, or firefighting, you need a payload that is appropriate for the mission. You can configure the DJI M300 RTK with multiple payloads at once in order to complete your mission. The Matrice 300 can mount up to 3 payloads simultaneously with a maximum capacity of 2.7 kg. If you only need one payload, you can configure the drone with a single downward gimbal. With two payloads, you can do a single upward and a single downward gimbal. With three payloads, the Matrice 300 can handle a single upward and dual downward gimbals. No matter how diverse your mission, the M300 is up to the task.

The M300 RTK uses the all new DJI Smart Controller Enterprise which has a built-in 5.5 inch 1080p display that is twice as bright as conventional smartphones or tablets at 1000 nits. The Smart Controller Enterprise version comes pre-installed with DJI Pilot and also supports third party apps. Feed live video or screen elements directly to an external screen using the HDMI output port on the Smart Controller via a HDMI Cable. The Smart Controller is designed for operating in temperatures -20℃ to 40℃.

Optional Dual Remote Controller Setup

The DJI Matrice 300 RTK, like other DJI commercial drones, can be set up with dual remote controller setup. With two remote controls both equally in control of the aircraft, the Matrice 300 is perfect for missions that require greater cooperation and flexibility. This allows for planning strategies and allowing one person to operate the aircraft while the other handles the payload. The difference being that the secondary operator can take full control of the aircraft flight with a simple touch of a button.

RTK Based Precision Positioning

Like most DJI drones, the Matrice 300 comes with RTK based precision positioning for greater accuracy. This positioning system provides ultra-accurate, centimeter level positioning for the M300, allowing you to skillfully guide the drone and set it down safely on the ground. It uses the same DRTK2 Mobile Base Station as the Matrice 210 RTK V2.

AI Based Features

The new DJI Matrice 300 RTK has advanced AI capabilities that greatly enhance your mission a turn a regular inspection into a smart inspection. Here are the Matrice 300’s AI features:

Live Mission Recording

The M300 allows for live mission recording, allowing you to record mission actions such as drone movement, gimbal orientation, photo shooting, and zoom level. This can be used in a smart inspection to create sample mission files that aid future automated inspections.

AI Spot Check:

The M300 can record the subject of interest accurately and automate future missions to get consistent results with each repeat mission. The AI powered system ensures that the shots are framed exactly the same every mission for accurate repeatability.

Waypoints 2.0

Waypoints 2.0 allows you to create up to 65,535 waypoints and set multiple actions for your payloads at each waypoint. You can even set actions for multiple payloads including 3rd party payloads, allowing the Matrice 300 to conduct a detailed and thorough smart inspection with maximum flexibility and efficiency.

Pinpoint

Pinpoint is a feature that allows you to mark an object in the camera or map view simply by tapping it. The drone technology will then run advanced sensor fusion algorithms to calculate the coordinates of the object and project it to each of the camera views as an AR icon. Pinpoint will then share the location of the object with another remote controller or online platforms.

Smart Track

Smart Track works similarly to pinpoint in that it allows you to mark an object with the drone’s camera. It then goes one step further in tracking and following these moving objects and continuously detecting their dynamic location. This is a perfect feature for surveillance operations that need to follow moving subjects such as people, vehicles, and boats.

The Zenmuse H20T camera comes with all three sensors that the H20 does with an additional radiometric thermal camera. This camera has a DFOV of 40.6 degrees, a resolution of 640×512, and a frame rate of 30fps. Its thermal sensitivity is less than or equal to 50mk@f1.0, which allows you to see the unseen and track objects by their heat signatures. This added thermal feature is integral when using the Matrice 300 for firefighting and finding hotspots in buildings.
Many commercial drone missions take place in suboptimal lighting or at night. The Zenmuse H20 and H20T come with a Night Scene mode to provide clearer visibility when operating in poor lighting conditions.

DJI MATRICE 300 RTK: THE DRONE OF THE FUTURE

Many commercial drones come with features that make for a seamless flight but end up lacking when it comes to their payload. DJI drones are not only equipped to perform in tricky environments and adverse weather, but also come with the latest visual technology that helps make your mission a success. The Matrice 300 is an incredible step forward for DJI in their Matrice series, ushering in a new era of drone technology and all new possibilities.

Thanks to the newest payloads of the Zenmuse H20 and H20T, you can use the Matrice 300 for anything from firefighting to powerline inspections. With enhanced optical zoom, a radiometric thermal camera, and laser range finder, there’s no limit to the ways this powerful combination of drone and payload can help save you time and money.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (STL.News) Gov. Andy Beshear announced Chemical & Industrial (C&I) Engineering Inc., a full-service engineering firm, will expand the company’s operations in Louisville with a $264,000 investment that will create 24 full-time jobs.

“Kentucky’s economy is strong and growing with companies across a wide range of industries continuing to expand,” said Gov. Beshear.  “C&I Engineering has been serving its customer base here in Kentucky for almost four decades, and its expansion is a welcome next step.  I am thankful for the company’s leadership and their commitment to the commonwealth and continued investment in Louisville.  I look forward to their growth and future success.”

This investment is a critical step for C&I in deciding where to hire staff and invest capital in state-of-the-art technology such as drones, scanners, engineering software and IT infrastructure.  C&I will leverage this investment along with concerted efforts to boost marketing and sales to create 24 quality jobs, including engineering professionals and skilled technical talent.  This growth will allow C&I to provide its services to a diverse set of clients across the U.S.

“C&I is proud to be a Kentucky company,” said Amanda Barmore, C&I’s business development and marketing manager. “Our values are deeply rooted in local employee ownership.  We look forward to expanding our business, while bringing highly compensated, technical jobs to the commonwealth.”

Founded in Louisville in 1983, C&I is a full-service engineering firm focused on executing projects in a collaborative environment using world-class tools and techniques.

C&I provides its services to a range of industries, including petroleum refining, and are ranked by Engineering News-Record as one of the top 15 companies in the United States providing engineering services to this industry.

In addition, C&I serves the distilled spirits, chemical, food and beverage, consumer packaged goods and utilities markets. Given the evolving nature of the U.S. energy landscape, the company understands the importance of focusing its growth toward these complementing industries.  Beyond its core engineering services, C&I also provides thermal imaging via drones and 3-D laser scanning.  The company currently employs 150 in the Louisville Metro area.

C&I Engineering’s investment adds to Kentucky’s growing engineering services sector, which employs more than 10,600 individuals statewide.  There are currently over 1,000 engineering service establishments throughout the commonwealth that produced $1.4 billion in GDP for the state in 2021.

Louisville-based company has operated in Kentucky for over 40 years.

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer said he is thrilled to see local companies growing and continuing the economic momentum in the area.

“Companies continue to see the high-value proposition of doing business in Louisville,” said Mayor Fischer.  “Since the start of this year, companies have announced plans to invest more than $484 million to locate or grow here, adding nearly 2,000 new jobs to our local economy.  It is particularly special to celebrate the expansion of home-grown companies like C&I Engineering, which continue to invest in our city and create more high-quality jobs.  Congratulations to C&I Engineering on its continued growth in Louisville!”

C&I Engineering’s investment and planned job creation furthers recent economic momentum in the commonwealth, as the state builds back stronger from the effects of the pandemic.

In 2021, the commonwealth shattered every economic development record in the books.  Private-sector new-location and expansion announcements included a record $11.2 billion in total planned investment and commitments to create a record 18,000-plus full-time jobs across the coming years.  Kentucky’s average incentivized hourly wage for projects statewide in 2021 was $24 before benefits, a 9.4% increase over the previous year.

In the past year, the Beshear administration announced the two largest economic development projects in state history. In September 2021, Gov. Beshear and leaders from Ford Motor Co. and SK Innovation celebrated a transformative $5.8 billion investment that will create 5,000 jobs in Hardin County.  And in April of this year, the Governor was joined by leadership at Envision AESC to announce a $2 billion investment that will create 2,000 jobs in Warren County.  These announcements solidify Kentucky as the EV battery production capital of the United States.

The economic momentum has carried strongly into 2022, with both S&P Global Ratings and Fitch Ratings upgrading Kentucky’s financial outlook to positive in recognition of the commonwealth’s surging economy.

And Site Selection magazine placed Kentucky at 6th in its annual Prosperity Cup rankings for 2022, which recognizes state-level economic success based on capital investments.

Kentucky has posted record low unemployment rates for four consecutive months, falling from 3.9% in April to 3.8% in May and 3.7% in June and July.

In July, the Governor reported the highest annual growth rate in 31 years.  And for the second year in a row, Kentucky’s General Fund budget surplus has exceeded $1 billion.  Also in July, Gov. Beshear reported that the state’s rainy day fund is up to a record balance of $2.7 billion, significantly higher than the $129 million balance the fund had when the Governor took office.

To encourage investment and job growth in the community, the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority (KEDFA) in August preliminarily approved a 10-year incentive agreement with the company under the Kentucky Business Investment program.  The performance-based agreement can provide up to $250,000 in tax incentives based on the company’s investment of $264,000 and annual targets of:

  • Creation and maintenance of 24 Kentucky-resident, full-time jobs across 10 years; and
  • Paying an average hourly wage of $55 including benefits across those jobs.

By meeting its annual targets over the agreement term, the company can be eligible to keep a portion of the new tax revenue it generates.  The company may claim eligible incentives against its income tax liability and/or wage assessments.

In addition, C&I Engineering can receive resources from Kentucky’s workforce service providers.  Those include no-cost recruitment and job placement services, reduced-cost customized training and job-training incentives.

Physical wellness is important, but there are several more aspects to consider, such as emotional, environmental, financial, intellectual, occupational, social, and spiritual. It is important for each individual to weigh these facets to create an ideal balance in their lives. This balance is something completely distinctive to each person and tailored to that person’s specific needs.

Here at C&I, we take into account each of these important aspects of wellness and try to determine how we can relate them to our work environment in order to support each associate and their needs. Our goal is to prioritize positive wellness practices and to provide the tools required to improve each individual’s wellbeing.

Last month, we conducted a very successful Wellness Fair that featured 8 different local vendors, all associated with improving wellness. These vendors included massage therapists, stress analysists, organic farmers, insurance brokers, and more.

This year, we received a Worksite Wellness Award at the 2022 WWCL Annual Conference. Our award was to celebrate our success in Mental Health and Tobacco Cessation. Two of our associates, Molly Steinmetz and Caroline Smith, accepted the award on C&I’s behalf.

In addition, our company hosts monthly events and/or challenges supported by the Go356 program. Our associates are encouraged to participate in these events, as well as join other online events throughout the year in order to gain points. These points can be cashed in for incentive prizes and have potential for a lower premium on health insurance for the following year. At C&I, it pays to improve your Wellness!

Kentucky’s whiskey distillers have expanded by 250% in the last 10 years and produce 95% of the world’s bourbon, but have a growing problem: What to do with the overwhelming supply of Distiller’s Spent Grains (DSG), also known as stillage, that have been used to make distilled spirits?

The situation was discussed recently at the 25th annual Distillers Grain Symposium held in Louisville, Kentucky on Oct. 25-26.

Distillers use large amounts of grains like corn, rye, wheat and barley to create bourbon, Kentucky’s signature spirit, and other whiskeys. That creates a lot of byproduct distillers refer to as DSG, or stillage, noted the University of Kentucky, home to James B. Beam Institute for Kentucky Spirits. The drastic expansion of bourbon production has not yet resulted in investment in dewatering technology, leading to large quantities of whole stillage.

Many of you are familiar with distillers dried grains (DDG) and distillers dried grain with solubles (DDGS) that are a major co-product from the production of ethanol made from corn. Ethanol plants have driers and large storage sheds and most of their coproduct is sold dried because it has a longer shelf life than wet distillers grains (WDG). DDG/DDGS sales at ethanol plants is close to 25% of a plant’s margin. As for spent grains from whiskey distilleries, nearly all of it is given away at no cost to farmers.

Larger distilleries have invested in equipment to dry out whole stillage and make it more portable, but smaller craft distillers don’t always have the funds for that, noted Brad Berron, director of research for the Beam Institute. “With Kentucky producing 95% of the world’s bourbon, spent grains are a significant issue in our state,” said Berron, who coordinates the research activities within the University of Kentucky’s James B. Beam Institute for Kentucky Spirits.

Mash in the whiskey distilling process refers to the mixture of grain, water and yeast that is initially fermented to produce alcohol. The leftover byproduct is called stillage or spent grain. According to the state of Kentucky, the number of distillers has increased 250% in the last decade. With that growth, 10 gallons of stillage are created for every gallon of bourbon made, with an estimated 96 million gallons of stillage produced statewide annually. For many years, livestock producers have been primary users of stillage for feeding their herds, since it is a great source of protein and energy for cattle. Dairy farmers have a harder time getting to distilleries in a timely manner because Kentucky’s dairies are in the southern part of the state, while the distilleries are in the center part. Also, some distilleries are constructed in urban areas with few cattle nearby to utilize the stillage as feed. DDGS has a very short shelf life and must be used quickly, or it will go bad, especially in the heat, and in turn, will lose the nutritional value. Stillage contains close to 93% water, which makes it challenging to transport and feed.

Distillery numbers are up 250% in the past 10 years, according to the Kentucky Distillers’ Association. For every gallon of bourbon produced, approximately 10 gallons of stillage remains, with an estimated 96 million gallons of stillage produced in Kentucky annually. Currently, demand for stillage is declining as the supply of stillage continues to increase.

The Beam Institute partnered with the Kentucky Distillers’ Association, Team Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development, Distillers Grain Technology Council, KY Innovation, Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet and innovation incubated to sponsor the Distillers Grains Reverse Pitch. Through this effort, the collaborators sought new and innovative technologies and solutions from problem solvers, inventors, entrepreneurs, and businesses to expand uses of stillage.

The top six solutions from innovators and entrepreneurs presented their creative ideas at the Distillers Grains Symposium, where a judging panel decided the winner.

First place was given to BioProducts, a Louisville-based company won the Distillers Grains Reverse Pitch contest. BioProducts, founded by CEO Jagannadh Satyavolu, partnered with C&I Engineering Inc., another Louisville company, for its pitch. Satyavolu said by using whole stillage, which is mostly water, there’s an opportunity to produce at least three profitable products.

“One of those is activated carbon, which is the preferred electrode material in supercapacitors, asymmetric batteries, and a variety of advanced batteries because of its high surface area and high purity. Imagine utilizing a Kentucky-grown technology, utilizing Kentucky’s own resources of stillage to produce activated carbon for the battery application,” Satyavolu said.

Fiber in the whole stillage can also be used to make xylose, a diabetic-friendly sugar substitute, while the protein can be used in animal feed, added Satyavolu. According to BioProduct’s projections, with 75,000 gallons a day of whole stillage, those three streams could produce $2.5 million in annual revenue.

Berron said some low-tech solutions are already in play, and research within the university is already very multidisciplinary and comes from many colleges across campus. As for the reverse pitch contest, he said they were looking forward to all the submissions. “We can’t wait to work with these folks and share our work with the state’s distilleries.”

Marathon Petroleum Business News – Dec 6, 2021

Crews removed the existing Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit (FCCU) Reactor to prepare for installation of the new reactor.

During a recent upgrade at Marathon Petroleum’s Robinson, Illinois, refinery, employees and contractors worked together to successfully install a new Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit (FCCU) Reactor, weighing in at nearly one million pounds.

The FCCU Reactor Optimization Project was part of the refinery’s recent turnaround, an industry term for planned maintenance and upgrades. The project consisted primarily of installation of the new FCCU reactor, which will use the latest  in technology and improve overall unit efficiencies to save energy while boosting production of gasoline and other products.

Installation of the new reactor required the use of a single 2,500-ton capacity crane that was so large it took crews close to 200 semi loads and 30 days to assemble.

“The sheer size and scope of this project upgrade was impressive,” said Jim Perry, FCCU Reactor Optimization Project Engineer. “To watch it come together in real-time makes it even more impressive, knowing the number of hours and coordination it took to complete this project.”

The Robinson refinery, a seven-time recipient of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR® award, consistently ranks in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide for meeting the program’s strict energy efficiency performance levels.

“We continually invest in performance upgrades at the refinery—safety being at the very top of the list,” said Amy Macak, Refinery General Manager at Robinson. “To watch our employees and contractors work together on a project of this scale was a sight to see.”

Field fabrication of the new reactor started in May 2019 and culminated in the turnaround at the Robinson facility, which utilized over 2,000 employees and contractors and took 51 days and approximately one million project hours to complete.
